“If I were a geneticist, I would say they would be different species of the same family,” says Craig Gilborn, former director at the Adirondack Museum, now known as the Adirondack Experience, in Blue Mountain Lake. Gilborn pointed out the similarity between the cure chair and the Lee-Bunnell “Westport chair” in his book, Adirondack Furniture and the Rustic Tradition.

For my tall people out there, I find it’s harder to get into the chair then out of them since it’s easier to get up then it is to get down in some cases. So as you can see it really does come down to your own personal situation as to whether they’re easy to get in and out of.
According to Mack’s book, Bunnell produced his “Westport Plank Chair” in a basement workshop and sold them for $4 out of a retail store on the town’s main street. By 1912, a version called the “Adirondack Bungalow Chair” was being sold through W.C. Leonard’s department store in Saranac Lake, and copycats soon followed. Bunnell continued to manufacture the chair himself until about 1930, producing variations that included an alternate-facing tête-à-tête version and another that converted to a rocking chair. By the time Bunnell died of pneumonia in March 1933, his chair design had found its way beyond northern New York. The newspaper notice announcing his death hailed him as the “manufacturer of the world-wide known Adirondack camp chair.”

And the best part? …I’ve been dying to use these bright colors and finally had a perfect excuse! Seriously, this project was so simple. It took me about an hour (broken up into two 30 minute spray sessions) to do 6 chairs.
Truth be told. This design rocks the outdoor furniture – it leads as others follow.
You will find most of them have some form of weatherproofing. So most of the times you don’t have to worry about such things. There are some chairs out there that aren’t weatherproof as they’re designed to be undercover.
Eucalyptus is a hardwood massively cultivated in Australia and recently in South America. It is relatively affordable than most other imported hardwoods.
This chair continues the trend of being portable and foldable, which is one of the best features that not all adirondack chairs boast. This is a feature that just makes life easier and something I think most can appreciate in their everyday life.
What about using a clear coat afterwards? Maybe if you do that the color won’t wipe off. What do you think Corey?
You should be able to find the local stores number. That’s a tough call because these are popular. If you are going to make the trip, go before they open. I saw these in stock the other day at my Costco & they were going fast. I was there around 10:30am. Glad you were able to get your hands on 5 though!
