At first, patients sat outside on collapsible steamer chairs or rockers or pulled two stationary chairs together to get comfortable. “They look kind of cold and miserable,” Catania says, referencing photographs of patients bundled in blankets, their feet resting on wooden armchairs. Around the turn of the century came an improvement: The “cure chair,” a chaise lounge-like recliner modeled on those used in European sanatoriums. With wide armrests, an adjustable back and springs that supported a tufted cushion, “It really gave people a much more comfortable way to lie outside,” Catania says. Production of the chairs ensued, with several area residents receiving patents on their designs. Most adopted the lounger profile, but at least one was designed as a reclining chair. Men rest on cure chairs on a porch. Historic Saranac Lake Collection

Throughout the 19th century, the bacterial lung disease tuberculosis—known as “consumption” for the way it wasted, or consumed, its victims—had plagued America’s expanding cities. By the time the bacterium causing it was identified in 1882, it was responsible for 1 in 7 deaths worldwide. It was the leading killer in turn-of-the-century New York, where it claimed 9,630 lives in 1900, a rate of 280 per 100,000.

These elements badly alter wood, for example, when water soaks in. The best wood for Adirondack chairs won’t rot, swell, warp or crack after long-term exposure to the elements.
Absolutely! You can spray paint wicker, but be sure to clean (and dry) very thoroughly and then use a multi-material primer layer. I painted mine white so the white primer acted like a base coat anyway….

Softwood is a cheaper option and very easy to physically manipulate with tools, so it shouldn’t be dismissed. You could use a selected few varieties of softwoods for Adirondack chairs.

Epoxy is good (jamie's suggestion) but if the chair is made of ABS plastic (which is a very common type of plastic) then you can "weld" it using pure acetone. Search "welding ABS with acetone" on YouTube for many examples of this.
Now the seat extends to the back, like a typical Adirondack but it does not stop at the front because it juts out to cradle your legs. Imagine sitting on this comfy chair with a book in hand and a towel wrapped around you… This definitely deserves to be your next outdoor woodworking project.

What about using a clear coat afterwards? Maybe if you do that the color won’t wipe off. What do you think Corey?

Hi Jamie. I didn’t prime them first. I just cleaned them and made sure they were dry before using 2 coats of spray paint.
