Resin Furniture The truth is that plastic resin is a bit of a misnomer; real resin is a plant-based material, and, unlike plastic, is not made from hydrocarbons. It wouldn’t be the first time that furniture designed for the sick or infirm crossed into the mainstream, says Patricia Kane, a curator of American Decorative Arts at Yale University Art Gallery, who obtained a Westport chair for the collection in 2002. A classic example is the wing chair, whose dual protuberances were likely designed to support the head of elderly or infirm occupants and which—like Bunnell’s patented chair—were sometimes fitted with commodes. “Nowadays they’ve migrated into our living rooms, and we think of them as living room furniture,” Kane says.
When deciding to buy an adirondack chair as a tall person one of the crucial components to consider is seat height. As the seats on these types of chairs recline backward, you need to consider how high the top of the seat sits.

The popularity of this updated design spread, and because the chair originated in the Adirondacks, it was widely-known as the Adirondack chair. The exception is in Canada, where the chair is called the Muskoka chair, likely due to its popularity in the Muskoka region.

The first one to make an Adirondack chair was an American named Thomas Lee. He made his chair as he was vacationing in Westport, New York in the Adirondack Mountains in 1903. Called “Westport Plank Chair” Lee offered the design to Harry Bunnell who was a carpenter. Bunnell saw the possibility of commercializing the design and got a patent for it in 1905 without asking Lee’s permission. Bunnell manufactured the “Westport chairs” for the next two decades. The chairs were painted green or medium dark brown and each one bore Bunnell’s signature.
