 Wood Wood
Oh and yes I said fake because it it’s not really wooden. It’s a synthetic wood material now known as Highwood. Probably the closest thing you can get to the real deal. But of course without the tedious maintenance that wooden Adirondack chairs are famous for. .

The best material is high-density polyethylene (HDPE) lumber. Despite its high cost, it is water-resistant and easy to clean by simply wiping it down with soap and a cloth. This material is a synthetic resin that is made to last long but isn’t bulky and heavy. It’s medium weight, making it portable. The material comes from recycled milk jugs, which is sustainable to manufacture.

So whats a person that’s taller than 6 feet meant to do? Well, to be honest, if you can’t get down very low without falling over, perhaps a chair like this is not for you. But don’t give up hope just yet, as the adirondack chairs listed below are better suited to the tall person.

Adirondack chairs put you in a comfortable position to hold children or pets on your lap. This outdoor chair is highly comfortable to sit and relax in – but it may not be for you if you have back or leg problems as it may be hard to comfortably lower yourself that close to the ground.
The history of the Adirondack chair begins in the Town of Westport, NY with the inventor of the Westport chair - Massachusetts native Thomas Lee. Lee's family owned a house in Westport, and he spent many of his summers there around the early 20th century.

Mahogany: Mahogany rivals teak and oak for strength. It has a rich, dense grain and resists decay. It also has good scratch resistance, but it requires refinishing every year to stay that way.

Once you have managed to avoid embarrassment and lowered yourself into the low profile seat, the next important factor is how deep the seat actually is.
Oak: Durable and solid, oak is a popular wood for all types of furniture, and for good reason. It’s heavy, giving Adirondack chairs a solid feel, and it’s beautiful. The price is comparable to that of pine and cedar. However, maintenance is another matter. Direct sunlight can cause streaking or color changes. Oak chairs should be kept in the shade, and they will need a UV-protectant stain.

Everything from the color to the timber cut grain wood feel can resemble a real wooden chair, perhaps the smell is different for those wanting to know. But the real winner for us somewhat lazy big guys is the no maintenance ever whatsoever appeal. Unlike traditional wooden Adirondacks, you wont need to sand, varnish or paint this chair ever again.

Since Adirondack chairs usually are outdoor furniture, they are even more likely to be ravaged by termites from underground. Therefore, when looking for wood, choose species that are resistant to termites and other destructive insects.

Bunnell never secured Lee’s permission to alter his invention, or to market it. But by all accounts, Lee, who was substantially well off himself, let it pass. There remains a family joke, which Elizabeth Lee retells with a wry smile: “Whenever someone comes up with an improvement for the chair,” she says, “We say, ‘Patent that.’” Smart News History Science Innovation Arts & Culture Travel At The Smithsonian Photos Video Games Subscribe Renew Give a gift Smithsonian Institution Smithsonian.com Air & Space Magazine Smithsonian Store Smithsonian Journeys Smithsonian Channel Smithsonian Books About Smithsonian Contact Us Advertising RSS Member Services Sustainability Terms of Use Privacy Statement Cookie Policy Advertising Notice © 2021 Smithsonian Magazine Privacy Statement Cookie Policy Terms of Use Advertising Notice Manage My Data Newsletter About us FAQ Institutional Certifications Our Story Products Latex Mattress Latex Pillow Latex Mattress Topper Why Talalay? Love your idea and the color! Went out and bought the exact same color (satin lagoon). I scrubbed my 2 chairs with a brush and used the hose to rinse and let them dry for hours before painting. Ran out of paint before finishing my second chair. Had to wait about 2-3 weeks to finish a little bit of touch up on 1st chair (due to back problems). I waited at least 3 weeks before even thinking about sitting on it. I also kept it in the garage for several days to dry right after spraying it (so it wouldn’t get rained on). I used an old towel to dry off the raindrops and noticed blue paint! Now I’m afraid to let anyone sit on it. I didn’t use primer. Any suggestions?

Many popular, plastic outdoor furniture pieces are made from recycled high-density polyethylene (HDPE/RIC #2). Though recycled HDPE may not be represented by a number, you might be able to tell a piece of outdoor furniture is made with recycled HDPE by the way it looks: It often has a vague wood-grain texture, but is shinier than untreated wood. Many current styles of Adirondack chairs are made with recycled HDPE.
