This bulletin contains instructions for building an Adirondack chair, matching footstool, companion side table, and Westport chair (an ancestor of the modern-day slatted Adirondack chair). Each project will take the moderately skilled carpenter less than a day to fabricate; for the beginner, maybe a weekend.
Ipe wood goes by several names. You might be familiar with Brazilian Walnut or South American ironwood. It is a hardwood that can have anything from a yellow to a brownish reddish hue. It is not only attractive, but its appeal doesn’t fade even after long-term exposure outdoors. .
Usually left outside, these chairs are subject to the elements, and with that comes rain, sun, heat, wind and any other crazy form of weather your geographic location can throw at them. In terms of heat, this is one of the biggest problems when it comes to plastic adirondack chairs.

Despite the site’s occasional shortcomings, we recommend it, and this is a great design to try your hand at, even if you don’t consider yourself to be an experienced builder.

Is there anything better than rocking back and forth? We loved it as children and as adults we are still fascinated with the soothing motion. Get some fun back in your life with the addition of an Adirondack rocking chair or Adirondack porch swing.
All of them are extremely durable and can withstand the different weather conditions. Whether it is in the raining conditions or snowfall, wood Adirondack chairs are the real deal. Teak is particularly good for all-year-round outdoor elements.
The Red Rocker is a classic Adirondack chair that is designed to be a rocking chair. It has the classic large backrest with long and wide arms. The seat is curved at the back as it keeps your feet from the ground at the front.
The final aspect to consider is weight capacity. As for us taller people generally weigh a bit more than average height folks, the weigh capacity becomes a factor. Fortunately, this Highwood bakes up the wider seat and taller backrest with an impressive 400-pound weight capacity. Making it one of the best adirondack chairs for heavier people as well. PolyTEAK has gone out of their way to make one of the most stylish looking Adirondack chairs on the market in my opinion. This is in big part thanks to the design that looks like a nice wood finish but in fact, it’s not wood. It’s a poly-lumbar material designed to not rot, give you splinters or cause you maintenance headaches.
In 1938, Irving Wolpin of New Jersey acquired a patent for another design change. Described as a "lawn-chair," Wolpin's chair had the slanted seat and wide armrests of the Westport chair, was constructed out of smaller slats, but also featured a rounded back and contoured seat. Wolpin's design is the most commonly replicated Adirondack chair today.
This basic Adirondack chair plan is one of the easiest and you will be able to complete this easily even in a day or in a single weekend. And if you wish to apply a coat of paint instead of wood stain, make sure to use a weatherproof coat especially if you plan to leave your chairs outdoors.
Make sure you invest in high quality materials, such as pressure-treated lumber, cedar, pine or redwood. Take accurate measurements and use a professional saw to get the job done. Always align the components at both ends before drilling the pilot holes and inserting the galvanized screws, in order to prevent the wood from splitting. Use waterproof glue to reinforce the joints. Since it’s made out of such a tough durable plastic you don’t have to worry about it getting damaged from the elements outside. A big part of this is thanks to it being waterproof this is a nice advantage to this Adirondack chair that some others don’t.
