It naturally flourishes in wet mushy surroundings, rendering itself rot-resistant. Perhaps cypress is often grouped with hardwoods because of its slow maturity rate, making it scarce and consequently raising its prices.

It wouldn’t be the first time that furniture designed for the sick or infirm crossed into the mainstream, says Patricia Kane, a curator of American Decorative Arts at Yale University Art Gallery, who obtained a Westport chair for the collection in 2002. A classic example is the wing chair, whose dual protuberances were likely designed to support the head of elderly or infirm occupants and which—like Bunnell’s patented chair—were sometimes fitted with commodes. “Nowadays they’ve migrated into our living rooms, and we think of them as living room furniture,” Kane says.
There is no easy answer to why Adirondack chairs are so expensive. A lot goes into the design of these chairs which I believe is a big part of the reason that do seem to cost more than others. Their design isn’t a simple basic design like most others, so their manufacturing process is more difficult.

Sorry to hear Jeffrey! Spare parts are cheap. It would be in their best interest to send you a few dollars in parts rather than return hundreds of dollars worth of chairs. Can I ask which part broke? Maybe there are others here that will be able to assist if we know exactly what part you need. Did you try calling & emailing them as well. Sometimes email works better
This is a very personal question that I can’t really answer for you since we’re all different. There will be certain body shapes and heights that will make getting in and out of these chairs difficult. Whether you have that shape or size I can’t really answer.
The recycled plastic material makes it water-resistant, and UV protected, which means it is easy to clean and won’t deteriorate. You wouldn’t have to deal with the cumbersome splintering, cracks, peels, or chips of a wooden chair. Fast and easy to assemble Nice vibrant color Solid and sturdy Don’t have to store away during winter Just wipe to clean Only able to fold if you disassemble the chair first Smaller than expected, not ideal for tall people Not as comfortable due to the straight back
According to Mack’s book, Bunnell produced his “Westport Plank Chair” in a basement workshop and sold them for $4 out of a retail store on the town’s main street. By 1912, a version called the “Adirondack Bungalow Chair” was being sold through W.C. Leonard’s department store in Saranac Lake, and copycats soon followed. Bunnell continued to manufacture the chair himself until about 1930, producing variations that included an alternate-facing tête-à-tête version and another that converted to a rocking chair. By the time Bunnell died of pneumonia in March 1933, his chair design had found its way beyond northern New York. The newspaper notice announcing his death hailed him as the “manufacturer of the world-wide known Adirondack camp chair.”

We picked up two at the EP Costco on Tuesday and are now looking for two more. Spoke with Michelle at SLP and she said they are in order but they don’t know when they will come in. St. Cloud had 10 available in the system so she had them hold two for us and we are grieving up there for them.
